Burned Out

I have a confession to make.

I’ve been feeling burned out lately.

This has been a glorious year of ministry: campus work, the new book, expansions in the radio ministry, etc. But it has also been a challenging year—funny how “success” and trials often go together.

Exactly what has caused the burnout? I’m not really sure. But I have a few ideas:

*First and foremost, I’ve had to make some tough ministry decisions this year. I’m at peace with these decisions, but getting there has been a long, exhausting process. Sorry for not going into more detail, but it’s for the best.

*This has been a very busy year—balancing several new ministry opportunities. I think I kind of hit a “wall” last month after February (my busiest month).

*Financial stress. God is faithful, and I’ve never once had to really worry about where my next meal is coming from. But like everyone else, I am affected by the current economic climate.

*It’s hot. Really hot.

I’m praying my visit home will be a time to recharge.

Here's a promotional video CSM did. Feel free to pass it around.

13 Year Old Father: The Truth

Anyone remember the story of Alfie Patten, the so-called "13-year-old father?"

I wrote my thoughts on this last February, expressing skepticism and sadness about the story.

Turns out I was right, but the truth is still tragic.  DNA test revealed the child's father is Tyler Barker, age 14 (at the time of the child's birth--he was only 13 at the time of the child's conception).

You can read the whole story HERE.

I realize this is "old news."  I meant to write about it back when I first followed up.  But I bet many of you have forgotten about it.

I just want to encourage everyone to think about two things:

1. The consequences of premarital sex are very real.

2. Not every sensational story you read is true.

Tyrone Wells-When All is Said and Done

Here's a song from Tyrone Wells called When All is Said and Done.  He wrote this while thinking about his own mortality and meeting Jesus one day.

Thought-provoking lyrics and great music!

Speaking Gig@Tagaytay

This coming Saturday morning (April 24th) will be my last speaking engagement before I visit the States.

The City of Tagaytay is promoting a series of monthly meetings with a "City of Character" as the theme.

This month they are focusing on forgiveness and compassion, so I'll be preparing a message related to these (maybe a message on the life of the Old Testament Joseph, but not sure).  The venue will be one of the sports arenas, so it looks like it will be a large group.

Please pray for me as I prepare this message.  Pray that Christ will be glorified and lives changed.

Learning The Hard Way: The "Lost" Contributors

Hey guys,

There are still a few contributors I have not heard from.  I want to make good on my promise to give you a copy of the book, but I don't have any way to get in touch with you.

Here are the contributors I haven't been able to contact--a listing of the stories and the titles I gave them:

Life After Abortion
This is is a story of a young woman who went overseas (OFW), got pregnant, and decided to get an abortion after returning to the Philippines.

Is She Pregnant?
This young man became sexually involved with his girlfriend and spent some sleepless nights wondering if she was pregnant.

Pregnant and Abandoned
The story of a woman who is raising her son by herself after being abandoned by her boyfriend.  This is the only contribution from a Westerner (non-Filipino).

Dangerously Close
A student gets physically and emotionally intimate with her high school crush after they graduate.  But they only have an "MU" relationship.  The relationship lasted for years and she was "dangerously close" to giving him everything.

Here are some contributors I don't think I've heard from but I'm not sure (can't remember):

Choosing Blindness
A young woman decides to stay in a relationship even though she sees clear evidence he is already married.

The Doomed Office Romance
A Filipina entertains an older Western man despite the fact that he is 100% pure jerk.

If you contributed one of these stories, please get in touch with me.  Email (re-send) the original story to me to verify you are the one who sent it.

Under Construction

As you can see, I've decided to change the look of my blog a little.  I still have a few adjustments to make, but I like this new template so far.  What I'm trying to do is simplify things just a little--I felt like my blog was too "busy" with too much information (links, etc).

Herpes: a Life-Long, Incurable Disease

One of the most unfortunate consequences of sexual immorality is sexually transmitted diseases (STD's).  I'd like you to share a few facts about genital herpes, one of the most common STD's.

Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus and is transmitted through sexual activity.  It causes blisters or groups of open sores (ulcers) around the genital area of both men and women.  It is highly contagious, and carriers can transmit the disease without even knowing they have it.  There is no cure for genital herpes--medications only treat outbreaks and minimize the symptoms.

Here are a few statistics from America:

*Approximately 1 in 6 (16%) of all Americans age 14-49 are infected with the Herpes virus.

*Approximately one million new infections occur each year.

*The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that more than 80% of people with genital herpes do not even know they are infected.

As you can see, my country is reaping a terrible harvest due to our sexual laxity.

The Philippines:

I'm having trouble finding good statistics on the Philippines, but one study I found showed about 9% of middle-aged women were infected with HSV-2 (one of the herpes viruses).

I want to make something else clear here: I've been discussing genital herpes, but this virus can also be transmitted through oral sex.

Herpes is a life-long, incurable disease--a disease you can avoid by obeying God and saving sex for marriage.

Radio Ministry Update (April 2010)

Hey guys,
I have some exciting news--the radio ministry is expanding!

Here's the short version of the story:

I met with Jim Reyes of Trans World Radio (TWR) a couple of weeks ago to discuss how we could partner together for the sake of the ministry.  He asked me to record some short (one or five minute) segments about purity and relationships--shorter versions of what we do on the Basta LoveLife show.  God willing, these segments will be playing on TWR's (120+) subscriber stations in May.

Note: for any of you in the radio business, just contact Trans World Radio to subscribe to these upcoming segments.
