Movie Review: Twilight

I watched Twilight primarily for research.  I know many of my students will watch it (especially the girls), so I want to be informed.  I had low expectations.

Here’s the story: a teenage girl moves to Washington to live with her father.  There she meets a family of benevolent vampires (who look like gay mimes).  She falls in love with one of them.   If you can stay awake long enough, you’ll see a battle with some not-so-benevolent vampires at the end of the movie.

In case you haven’t figured it out, I did not enjoy this movie.  I was absolutely bored out of my mind for two hours.  The vampire family reminded me of the Munsters, a corny 50’s comedy.  The brief action sequence didn’t come close to snapping me out of my cinema induced coma.

In fairness, I must say the disdain for Twilight seems to be gender specific.  One of the female friends that watched with us had already seen it once and came back for a second dose.  The other saw it for the first time.  She gave it a raving review and wanted to watch it again.  I don’t get it--wouldn't kissing the undead be kind of like pressing your lips against a frozen piece of lunch meat?

Is Twilight harmful to its adoring teenage fans?  Not necessarily.  But if I were the a father of a teenage daughter, I’d remind her of two things:

1.    Choosing the “bad boy” type is a losing battle.  It’s fine for movies, but it doesn’t lead to a happy ending in real life (see also: Three Stupid Words Women Say).

2.    Lasting marriage relationships are not based on drama and conflict.

Conclusion: Twilight is an over-hyped teenage chick flick.

I watched "crying ladies" last night. Thought it's hilarious. Some scenes were pero...not as good as I expected. Chick flick din...di ko type.

But at least, I learned na yung mga chinese pala, they really hire people to cry over their dead, how weird is that?

    yes indeed kuya kevin..

"I think this film is definitely a victim of it’s own expectations."

"Twilight is the ideal vampire movie for teen girls -- and nobody else."

definitely a chick flick. it's boring zzZZ, dumb, corny (yeah like the munsters ^^,) and OMG -- I'm so totally not a teenage girl.

watched it last night with a couple of friends (girls) they too agreed for a second run.

as an avid reader of any book, i still prefer reading the novel rather than a rubbish Hollywood fascination.

    enough said.
    throw rotten tomatoes at em!

I guess what made this movie a hit is the fact that it's a romance/thriller movie. teenage fanatic of the book also made this a successful film.

    just my two cents. ^_^

Very true. As I perceived it, my friends just liked the "kilig- moments" of Ella and Edward. All those Kilig Fantasies... Romance Novel is a form of Porn for women.

I haven't watch the movie and even read one of the books, and i never will. seeing all my classmates addicted to it makes me think that it really sucks?!even the conflict of taking bella as a sport, duh?!

i agree with kevin even though i haven't read the book and watched the movie. reading the summary and review of the book made me decide this is not for me. not even for entertainment.

Me and my husband watched the movie. I haven't read the book and doesn't the big deal about it. My husband thought I'll love the movie. Guilty, I'm hopelessly romantic.

I agree that it was actually boring, dragging. But it made me feel like a teenager again gushing over Edward Cullen. *LOL*

I'm actually reading the series right now and i find it dragging in some points too. But what the heck, the face of Edward Cullen lingers pa rin! :D

Bwahahahaah...you learn quickly that movies do not provide the most Godly (or sensible) relationship advice...

    Hi kuya ^^

First, thanks for visiting my blog.

Second, I share the same sentiments with you regarding twilight. As a girl, I did find Edward Cullen "dazzling" in some scenes.

I also did see the movie in the internet before watching it in theatre. If it ain't for my friends, I wouldn't watch it in theatre. I just wanted to bond with them that's why I went with them. =D

I just read Twilight. . And I don't think I'll be able to read the other books.heheh

    Anonymous,
Thanks for your comment, but I'm afraid it promotes some things that I simply do not want on this website.

i've never heard of the book till the movie came out...and i refused to watch it in the cinema...im not much of a tv/movie person so it really didn't fascinate me....plus my favorite movie is the godfather so that says a lot about the type of movies i like.

then last night i came across a really good online movie copy (i know pirated movies...where are my christian convictions right?) LOL. anywhoo...i watched it just for curiosity sake...

and i liked it. it was cute. the twilight frenzy gave it too much hype but all in all..it was a good kilig movie just like other romantic movies. LOL. and im not a teenager.

and no it's not "emotional porn"...i liked it but it doesn't mean i fantasize getting bitten by a vampire! (i really dislike that term!)

a metrosexual vampire is quite interesting to watch, though. LOL

to each his own i guess. :)

    rencalago says:

    s very interesting story

"Metrosexual vampire" - now that was good!! So Twilight is kind of like a postmodern version of Dracula.

    Hi Kuya Kevin!

I've read all four books of the Twilight series, and I've seen the movie five times! Well, you could say that I'm quite a fan. LOL

It is a love story... yeah, a chick flick like you said. But, in my opinion, the book is way better than the movie.

Anyway, just because Edward is a vampire, it doesn't automatically makes him a "bad boy", right? Edward's personality in the film is so much different from the books. He's very decent and selfless.

I know, my reaction is kind of biased because I'm a fan, but I think I can say why girls who like the books and the movie are really crazy about Edward Cullen. Nowadays, it's just so hard to believe that there are still gentlemen out there who's willing to love someone common, like Bella. And you know how some girls are hopeless romantics, right? :-)

Well, I give the movie 3 out of 5 stars though.

Well, there's that whole issue of him having urges to drink her blood.

Yes, I know he is a defender type in the movie, but he also described blood as his "heroin." It's only a movie, but some impressionable girls might get the wrong idea from it. That's my only point.

    Hi, Kuya Kevin!

My friends at school watched Twilight, and I guess I was the only one in our block section who hasn't. Anyway, I was told that it was good that I wasn't able to watch it. I've read the book, and...and...no offense to the fans of the series...the whole plotline made me cringe.

Something about the Edward hoopla made me think: yes, it would be nice to have someone like Edward, but it does seem to me he was bordering to the creepy. Ending your life because your girl has left you has some serious problems. If I were Bella, I would've run to the other direction, romantic Edward or no.
